Tapa
The town of Tapa is Estonia`s most important railway junction. Tapa owes its existence to the railroad.
By train Tapa is situated 77 km to the southeast from Tallinn, 112 km to the northwest from Tartu and 133 km to the west from Narva.
130 years ago virgin forests covered the area of Tapa. The construction of the Tapa-Tartu branch of the railway began in 1875. From that time on Tapa grew quickly as a railway workers village. When a railway station was built on land bought from the Tapa manor, the station inherited the name of the manor - Tapa.
Schools
There are four schools in Tapa: Tapa Gymnasium (founded in 1919), Russian Gymnasium (1945), Children`s Music School (1957) and a reform school for Russian-speaking boys (1965). In December 2002 a new sports centre was opened near Tapa Gymnasium.
